Peel-and-Stick Wallpaper vs. Wall Decals: What's the Real Difference?

Selvklæbende tapet eller wall stickers?

The real difference is scale and purpose: a decal is a single motif you place as an accent, while peel-and-stick wallpaper is designed to cover a large, continuous area the way traditional rolled wallpaper would. Once you see the two side by side, the distinction is obvious.

A wall decal: one motif, a specific spot

A decal is meant to be looked at as an individual object — above a headboard, beside a mirror, on a door. You're not trying to cover the wall; you're adding one deliberate detail to it. The commitment is small, both in cost and in coverage, which makes decals a good way to test an idea, decorate a nursery corner, or finish off a spot that a bigger piece of furniture doesn't reach.

Peel-and-stick wallpaper: built to cover an area

Wallpaper works differently. It's made up of several pieces — sometimes many — designed to be arranged together across a larger wall area: a full feature wall, the space behind a headboard, or the front of a cabinet. You're not adding one detail, you're replacing what traditional paper wallpaper would do — just without the paste or the steamer.

How to actually decide which one you need

Ask yourself what you're trying to solve. If the answer is "this one blank spot needs something," you want a smaller decoration — cheap, fast, low-risk. If the answer is "the whole wall feels empty," you can look at either a few large motifs or a number of smaller ones you arrange together in a pattern.

They share the same underlying material

Worth knowing: both the large and small decorations at Tonka Papers are made from the same self-adhesive PVC-free textile wallpaper. The difference isn't in the material — it's entirely in how much of the wall it's designed to cover. A butterfly decal and a tulip wallpaper set go on your wall the exact same way; they're just solving different-sized problems.

Mix & Match

You can use both large and small at the same time — a set of larger motifs like the big tulips can be combined with a surrounding pattern of smaller flowers, for example. Or you can use the large flowers as the main statement on one wall and scatter a handful of small decals around the rest of the room to tie the look together. Our wall decor is very flexible — pieces can be flipped, rotated, and placed however you like, so they fit the exact architecture of your home or office. You can mix and match to create your own mural, your own design, something no one else has. Or you can install it exactly as we suggest, so you don't have to think about direction and order yourself.
